Freedom is wasted on the free, just as youth is wasted on the young. It seems horrible to say, but the young and the free in this country are mostly ignorant of what they have.
It is probably the most unique thing about humans . . . being able to hold two opposing ideas in their head and trying to live the middle ground.
With the freedom to “Plant as though you were going to live for ever, and harvest as though you were going to die tomorrow,” most of us love to polarize toward one position or the other.
In this time of peace, a favorite pass time of many, mine included, is to pretend to be morally superior, especially if I don’t have to make the moral choice for myself, but if I can make them from a comfortable theoretical position, I can then make the best choices for others.
I just want the world to be a clean, simple place. No mess. No fuss. Just make it right. Make it Rush Limbaugh.
Keep the baby, kill the baby. Save the Mom, kill the mom. Toss out the illegal aliens, give them amnesty. Kill the murderers. Watch football.
On this, Hitler’s birthday, I wonder how brave I really am. If I were a
collaborator or resister in the face of a Prague Winter or an Auschwitz Internment, or my own chance to join the Third Reich?
Oh, the freedoms I’ve wasted being a rebel without a cause, I really wonder how brave I am.
And realizing the crappy reality that the smaller I’ve made my life, the bigger my smaller frustrations become, and the more sure I am about the bigger choices other should make.
If being cut off in traffic sets me off or being ticked off about having to wait for a seat at a restaurant, how superior could I possibly be?
Moral people are made not born. Made through their daily choices to do better to make better, and to strive for right, I think.
I do know I am so very thankful I have never had to make some tough choices like, “if my unborn baby were somehow horribly deformed or my wife’s
pregnancy would endanger her or the baby, what would we do. What would she do? If I were drafted for a crap war like going into Iraq, would I defect or serve.
The draft should be instituted in this country. Choose going into the military or going into domestic service. Invest in your country, we’d get better politicians, better voters. Less whining. It’s how illegals could earn citizenship, server with no pay. While citizens would earn money, serve with pay.
There is a cost to everything. Freedom isn’t free.
Freedom is wasted on the free, just as youth is wasted on the young. It seems horrible to say, but the young and the free in this country are mostly ignorant of what they have.

We seem to squander our freedom and as much as I wouldn’t want to serve at the national level, I do think the Swiss, the longest running democracy in our age has has something to teach all democracies . . A national conscription. Serve in the military or serve your country in some other way.
Are you born a Collaborator or Resister? Are you made that way by your soul, your parents, your education? Or, your choices?
